Quite often in today's modern society abortion is considered just another form of birth control. Many people do not bat an eyelid at it as long as it is performed before 20 weeks gestation. For some reason, after this point in time the thing growing in a mother's stomach suddenly becomes a human being with rights of it's own, and people are horrified at the thought that a child after 20 weeks gestation should be killed. But we are not here to find out why people think the way they do, we are here to see what the Bible has to say on this topic.
You might be saying, What does the Bible mention abortion? Well, no. Not abortion, but it does have some very significant things to say about the child in the womb. Let us open God's Word together and read what He has to say.
"I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly." Psalm 22:10.
"For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb." Psalm 139:13.
In these texts David tells us that the Lord was his God from his mother's belly, and that God covered him while he was in his mother's womb.
"Thus saith the LORD that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen. ... Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself;" Isaiah 44:2, 24.
"And now, saith the LORD that formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, Though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the LORD, and my God shall be my strength." Isaiah 49:5.
Isaiah takes this thought further. He tells us that God formed him in his mother's womb. Not only this but Isaiah was chosen of God to be His servant while still in his mother's womb.
"Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations." Jeremiah 1:4, 5.
Jeremiah takes it even further telling us that God knew him before he was formed in his mother's belly. As well and the fact that he was sanctified and ordained a prophet before he was born.
As soon as conception occurs the cells start dividing and forming into a human being. All the information that is needed to make a full and complete human being is already there in those few cells. But without the power of God the sperm and egg that join together will come to nothing. For God is the creator of all things. He is the author of Life.
"For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:" Colossians 1:16.
"All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men." John 1:3, 4.
So God is the one who starts the little life growing in the mother's womb before even the mothers know about it. He covers that child, and knows him or her. Sometimes He even chooses them for a special job before they are born. So when someone purposely goes out of their way and kills that little life, they are breading the sixth Commandment.
"Thou shalt not kill." Exodus 20:13.
In the old Mosaic laws if one person killed another the murderer was to be killed. (See Numbers 35:16-19.) This law was given to the children of Israel to show them how much God abhors murder. Those who are unrepentant murders are counted among those who will not be saved:-
"Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God." Galations 5:19-21.
"Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie." Revelation 22:14, 15.
So is abortion wrong? According to what we have read in the Scriptures, abortion is murder. Murder is a sin, and is wrong. Therefore abortion is wrong. Anyone who is an unrepentant murderer will not get into the kingdom of God, but will perish in the lake of fire. In closing we would like to share one more texts with you.
"Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward." Psalms 127:3.
